Although this trend has been hot for several seasons now, military inspired pieces are gaining new ground and are one of the hottest trends of the season. What I love about this trend is its versatility–a military jacket can be dressed down for class or dolled up for a night out. Military inspired outfits are easy to pull off and a great way to show off your style.
How to Work the Military Trend
- Try out skinny cargo pants. I bought a few pairs this season and have absolutely fallen in love with them. They look cool when paired with a t-shirt and gladiators for a casual look, or with a frilly top and blazer for a night out.
- Military jackets are a must. They come in every variety, from cropped to long, cotton to wool, thick to light. They’re easy to pair with jeans or a basic dress
- Contrast is key. The hottest way to rock this trend is by pairing it with unexpected textures and prints, such as sequins, florals, and lace.
- Don’t overdo it. This is probably pretty obvious, but don’t pair more than one military themed item with another. It will end up looking like a costume.
A great way to transition a summery dress into fall is by pairing it with wintery exterior pieces. Black leggings or tights are a winter essential (just be sure you wear them with a dress, skirt, or shorts–LEGGINGS AREN’T PANTS!) and I’ve been craving a pair of lace up booties all season. The ones pictures are around $30 from Forever 21, but I’ve been lusting after this pair by Jeffrey Campbell. An olive green industrial jacket is one of my favorite pieces I’ve bought this season. It goes with everything, is thick enough to function as a raincoat, and adds edge to even the most feminine dress.
This outfit is pretty bold, but can easily be tamed down with a pair of leather or satin shorts instead of sequins. For extreme cold weather, throw on a pair of knee high stockings or tights with a pair of platforms. Platforms are the ultimate win-win situation–they add height and drama, but don’t beat up your feet in the same way that stilettos do. A cropped military jacket provides just enough contrast to this outfit, and finish it off with gold jewelry.
Lace and bustier inspired tops and dresses are still in style, and the perfect way to dress it down is with a pair of skinny cargo pants. J Brand Hooligans are the skinny cargo pants of choice for celebrities, but you can get amazing pairs at almost any store at the mall. I got a pair of olive green pants at Old Navy for $22 and tan ones at Forever 21 for $20! Top it off with a chic boyfriend blazer, tough wedges, and a blingy cuff.
